Statement of Intent Cuba has been a communist country since the revolution in 1959, however with the collapse of the Soviet Union is communism corning to an end? Cuba, Vietnam, Laos and China are the last remaining communist countries, but the latter has embraced the capitalistic ideology of the west bringing huge social changes to China.Cuba has had little choice but to re-evaluate its increasingly isolated position in the world and as a result nearly 400,000 Cubans have now obtained self employed licenses that allow them to work independently of the state.I have visited Cuba a few times and things are slowly changing for the few, the government knows it has to release its iron grip on its citizens but is stuck in the Soviet era dogmas that China and Vietnam disposed of decades ago. When I mentioned changes that are happening in Cuba to a Cuban friend and maybe there was light at the end of the tunnel his reply was "I cannot see light of the end of the tunnel.................... I cannot even see the tunnel".When you travel around the country, yes you do see subtle changes but you still see a country desperate for foreign investment which is proving almost impossible during these difficult financial times. The intention with this panel ofphotographs is to capture the ambience of the towns and cities of Cuba along with its inhabitants and to record what I have seen on my travels, a snapshot in time.
