ATRAPADOS [“No way out”]Violence in the family and juvenile deviant behaviour in Lima“Atrapados” [2006-2008] deals with urban youth in Lima involved in drugs and violence, with their lack of future in a society that has already rejected them, and with the reasons that push them to embrace such a life. It talks about the sorrow of many boys and girls met in their gangs, drug rehabilitation centres, foster houses and prisons. They contributed to this reportage with their testimonials, writings and silence. Their texts appears next to the photos, in an intimate combination of elements that give readers a deeper insight into a difficult reality. This work will not improve the lives of so many teenagers, or resuscitate those who were photographed and have already died amid general indifference. Perhaps it will raise the following questions: “Is it right for society to consider young people living on the streets like garbage? What responsibility does society hold with respect to juvenile delinquent behaviour? How can violence in the family be reduced? How can private drug-rehabilitation centres - which operate with no skills and resources - be controlled and supported? Are there alternatives to imprisonment for young delinquents?”.
