Framlingham is one of the most attractive of the small Suffolk market towns, and our June outing will visit its two main attractions. the church and the castle.

The party will meet at the church at 1000. We will be given a short introductory tour of its treasures, after which we will be free to photograph inside until around 1200.

St. Michael's Church is a fine example of Perpendicular architecture as often found in Suffolk, with stone and flint construction including flint flushwork and a fine tower. Its chief fame rests in its 16th connection with the Howard family, who rebuilt the chancel and erected a series of tombs for family members before moving their main seat to Arundel (Sussex). The six main tombs, five of which are of Howards, date mainly from the 16th C, and are considered as the last major display of religious imagery in England before such display ceased under the influence of the Reformation.

Arrangements will be made for lunch close at hand in the centre of Framlingham, and in the afternoon we will visit Framlingham Castle, which is also close by.

One of the most picturesque castles in England, it is one of the earliest built with a curtain wall. It is in remarkable condition, and fine views can be obtained of, and from, its 12th century walls. The castle overlooks Framlingham Mere, a 33 acre lake now part of a nature reserve. The castle is owned by English Heritage, and we will be able to use tripods  (except on the narrow curtain wall walkway).

We have not been charged for visiting the church, for permission to photograph, or for the short introductory tour, so participants are encouraged to donate generously to the church fund on the day.
